TREATMENTS
How long does it take?
The length of treatment depends on the individual patient, however, the average time spent in braces ranges between 18 and 24 months. Minor corrections can be corrected in as little as 6 months. Before your treatment begins, our orthodontist Dr. Estes will provide you with an estimate for how long treatment may be expected to take. However, it is important to remember this is only an estimate, as there is no way to tell exactly how long treatment will take.
There are several factors that come into play that can impact treatment time. The younger you are, the more efficient treatment may be. Additionally, some treatments may offer quicker treatment times, and some patients’ may simply respond to treatment much faster than others. Patients who are compliant with Albany orthodontist orders will keep their treatment on track.
Every malocclusion is different because each patient is different. Some patients can enjoy fast treatment times, while others may be in treatment for a longer time. It is important to never compare your treatment to anyone else’s because yours is unique to you. We can see one patient with an overbite finish treatment in as little as 13 months, while for another treatment it may take 27 months. Your treatment is as unique as you are!
We know patients love the more cosmetically pleasing orthodontic options that are available today. However, there is a reason why metal braces are still used and it’s a very good one – they are efficient! While options such as clear aligners can offer a more discreet way to get your new smile, they also require a much higher degree of patient compliance in order to keep your treatment on track.
- If you are not prepared to follow all of your orthodontist’s directions, your treatment may take longer than estimated. This is especially true if you choose clear aligner therapy, as you are responsible for maintaining your aligner wear, or if you’ve been prescribed elastics Clear aligners have the highest degree of patient compliance required because the aligners are removable. However, in order to be effective, they must be worn a minimum of 22 hours a day. Failing to comply with your orthodontist’s recommendations can alter your treatment schedule.
- Remember to maintain all appointments with your general dentist while in treatment. Healthy teeth will respond better to treatment, so be sure you visit your dentist every six months.
