Orthodontic appliances can be made of metal, ceramic, or plastic, and can be fixed onto the teeth or removable. Regardless of which type of appliance, the method to move the teeth is essentially the same. We place a constant, gentle force in a controlled direction to slowly move the teeth to their ideal positions.
In the past, the term metal mouth had an obvious meaning – metal brackets were placed around each tooth, making the treatment highly visible. Today, brackets are much smaller and more efficient. You can even choose clear braces to ensure they blend in as much as possible. Today’s wires and materials are also more efficient, allowing teeth to move faster and more comfortably than ever before.
Treatment time varies for each patient and can last anywhere from six months to three years. The amount of time you spend in treatment will depend on your age, treatment option, and the severity of your issue. You also play an important role in your treatment time. The more diligent you are in following your orthodontist’s instructions, the faster your treatment will be.
Before treatment begins, Dr. Estes will discuss all of the options available to you, and provide an estimate for how long treatment will take.
